Susan Cantrill-Williams
VIEW VIRTUAL EXHIBITION
Susan’s art practice involves drawing in the landscape developing figurative and abstract images reflecting the extraction and quarrying processes that have impacted and altered the appearance of the North Wales landscape.
Mainly working around The Great Orme, Parys Mountain and Snowdonia regions, the geographical and geological layers represent the physical vision.
The images are constructed from layers of painting, drawing, and print, using local organic and mineral pigments overlaid with precious metals supported by canvas, rag, papers or wood block. The way the land has been formed, informs the process of her image making.
Figurative practice is evident, but mainly replaced with textural, linear and abstract images, expressing and evoking the manipulated and effaced surfaces of the landscape. The transition to abstract image embraces the viewer to formulate his or her own internal idea of corrupted skylines, mountains, quarries, lakes and aerial views.
