Harry Cowley
Harry Cowlee is a Liverpool based artist and woodworker. His art is an arrangement of reworked natural materials, exploiting the shape and texture of wooden blocks and found objects.
Harry says about his work:
“When I left school In 1953 I was supposed to go to Art college, it never materialised as my parents required me to go to work, so art became a leisure activity.
I finished working in 1992 and immediately enrolled at Prescot Art College doing art and design, after getting my qualifications I applied for a place at Hope university and was accepted in 1994 doing art and design, I chose to do this course as it enabled me to work with a variety of media which included wood, metal, ceramics, and textiles.
I achieved my degree a BA honers in design in 1997.
My work comes from my imagination and the properties of the colour and the grains in exotic woods and sometimes from the comments of friends and family, before I constructed my base reliefs I had worked through all the other mediums oils, watercolours, acrylics, and sculpture which never fulfilled my aims in attaining in my work. I was given a piece of Purpleheart mahogany which sparked my interest in the texture and colour of the wood.”
