In the Studio: Hazel Barrett

This month dot-art speaks to artist Hazel Barrett.

Hazel Barrett is an artist working in mixed media. She’s passionate about reflecting life in light and colour. Her paintings are usually created in acrylics and pastels. In addition to her artistic practice, Barrett has had a long career as a news journalist’.

Can you describe your style of art?

I’m a painter with a passion for light and colour.

Which medium do you work with and what do you like about it specifically?

I like to work with acrylic paint, because of its vibrancy and flexibility.

Can you talk us through your process? Do you begin with a sketch, or do you just go straight in? How long do you spend on one piece? How do you know when it is finished?

It starts with a sketch and develops into colour and light, depending on the subject.

When did you begin your career in art?

Eight years ago.

Who or what inspires your art?

What I love and see around me.

Why is art and creativity important to you?

It’s a parallel universe in which you can fly.

What do you gain from being a member with dot-art?

A community of like minded people.

What does it mean to be an artist in the Liverpool City Region?

It’s a city steeped in creativity.

What are you working on at the moment?

Abstract images of nature, flowers and people.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?

Keep painting.
