In the Studio: John O’Neill

This month dot-art speaks to artist John O’Neill.

John studied illustration in Cambridge and completed a Fine Art Degree at Liverpool John Moores University.

Liverpool’s rich and varied architectural heritage contrasting with the new urban skyline provides material for John’s evolving cityscapes.

The movement of light and transient colour changes influences his expressive responses in drawing and painting and provides endless inspiration for his creative process.

Can you describe your style?

Expressive representation of the built and natural environment.

Which medium do you work with and what do you like about it specifically?

Painting and Drawing – I like to rework in paint and the challenge of capturing light and movement.

Can you talk us through your process? Do you begin with a sketch, or do you just go straight in? How long do you spend on one piece? How do you know when it is finished?

It varies depending on the subject. Sometimes I sketch and use charcoal tonal study as a start which leads into painting. However in other instances I can go straight in with paint building up with acrylic finishing with oils. Time spent also depends on the size of the work…can go from a few hours to months to complete piece. I often have a few pieces on the go at a time and leave them for a while to then come back with fresh eyes allowing me to adjust if necessary, but sometimes I instinctively know when a piece of work is finished.

When did you begin your career in art?

Since completing my fine art degree in Liverpool.

Who or what inspires your art?

It’s very hard to pinpoint but I like react to my surroundings, evocations of memories and experiences good or bad.

Why is art and creativity important to you?

Its important because it gives me a vital freedom to express myself and respond to my reality.

What do you gain from being a member with dot-art?

Being part of an artistic community helps me to be connected and hopefully get my work seen and appreciated by more people.

What are you working on at the moment?

A Cityscape painting of the pier head at night.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?

Don’t be afraid to fail.
