Flag It Up is a partnership between dot-art and Bruntwood Works to create an exciting new platform for public art in Liverpool – using flags!

In September, we launched an open call for artists based in the Liverpool City Region to design the first flag for the project. This will be flown for 6 months, after which a second artist will be commissioned. The selected artist will receive a fee of £500 and a one year artist membership with dot-art.

Sumuyya Khader was selected to create the first flag. Sumuyya (b. 1988, Liverpool) is an artist working in a multiplicity of ways within the sector working with major institutions, projects, publishers, social enterprises and artist-led groups. Her practice is a combination of illustration, drawing & print works that predominantly explore place and identity. She has recently set up Granby Press, a community-based organisation with a focus on printed material and design

She says: “Black – We Exist is a piece that hopefully conveys the importance and presence of the Black community in Liverpool. Acting as a small declaration of existence in a diverse and important city.”
