Sharon Kayll Mathews

Sharon has often described herself as a printmaker that likes to paint, and sometimes a painter that likes to print.

Using source material such as drawings, rubbings, colours, textures and photographs, Sharon makes art to satisfy her craving to get physical with the art materials. She loves the messiness of using paints and inks and embraces the accidental mark making and unpredictability of printmaking.

In her most recent body of work, Sharon has been blending techniques and media including painting, printmaking, digital drawing and college to create a richness of colour and texture on which to explore the old age genre of portraiture. Responding to the emerging abstract backgrounds, and being motivated by the sitter’s expression, Sharon’s portraits probe humanity through feelings of vulnerability and power.

While the sitters may not be familiar, Sharon would like her viewers to feel inspired, curious and connected, as we all ponder our place in the modern world.
