Martin Jones
After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1988, Martin Jones worked as a freelance illustrator for magazine and book publishing companies in London. Clients included the Radio Times, Elle magazine, Cosmopolitan and The Observer magazine. In 2002 he began lecturing in illustration at Wigan and Leigh College. Martin is currently a full-time painter and takes part in exhibitions around Merseyside.
Martin draws inspiration from nature, a recurring theme being trees and their changes throughout the seasons. In these paintings he looks for pattern and structure within apparent randomness and confusion, imposing order and emphasizing repetition of forms and shapes.
The cat studies reveal a development of Martins illustration style. Originally intended as unrelated pictures,as the series progressed characters reappeared, and then became part of a bigger story. Later images show a deliberate move to more minimal compositions using a restricted palette.
