Description
Claire says about this work:
My work has always dealt with landscape, surfaces and how over time the earth changes through erosion or through human intervention. I love looking at rock formations and following this journey of layers, the softness of their texture or the rigid edges. The veins of earth created by rivers changing their path. How we carved roads into the landscape, through mountains and underground. It fascinates me.
I normally depict these using much brighter colours, influenced by flora or old paint peaking through old gates or signs. Sometimes it can be an emotional decision, the music I’ll be listening to at the time of discovery or creation.
This time I wanted to use earthy tones, charcoals, coppers, blacks etc. Using the same playfulness with opacity to create layers and tone which nod towards the layers you see in sediment or sandstone. The gold lines offer a feeling of opulence, pulling your eyes around the canvas almost taking you on this journey similar to that of the subject.
This painting is huge. It demands your eye. A statement of abstraction but with the softness of this layered composition.
