This month dot-art speaks to artist Daniel Meakin.
“Ever since I executed my first painting when my school days era was coming to an end, and until the present day, I have been inspired and intrigued by my urban surroundings, whether they be in my home city of Manchester or further afield like London, Barcelona or Miami.
I’m always on the look-out for visuals such as architectural features, composition, and general urban tapestry.
I have been a fine art painter for more than 30 years, selling my paintings internationally since the age of 15 and so it’s safe to say that my art-making and personal life are intertwined.
“Daniel’s paintings are exceptionally multi-coloured, overjoyed, and stimulating – waking us from our unaware slumber.
Not only are his paintings fused with academic fundamentals of art, like form, colour, and texture, but also screech the maximalist style in a fashionable sensibility.
There is no dearth of concepts, meaningful identities, and multifarious objects. Instead, each painting is a disclosure of a new tale and experiences.”

Can you describe your style of art?
Abstract Figurative.

Can you talk us through your process? Do you begin with a sketch, or do you just go straight in? How long do you spend on one piece? How do you know when it is finished?
When executing a painting, whether it be custom-made, for an exhibition, or solely for my own pleasure, I like to be spontaneous in my approach, sampling and experimenting with various styles and techniques, which often includes collage.
When did you begin your career in art?
I have been executing and selling my paintings for 35 years since I was 15 years old.
Who or what inspires your art?
Renowned Artists who have influenced me the most throughout my career are are Friedensreich Hundertwasser, David Hockney, and Paul Klee.
Why is art and creativity important to you?
Being an artist is who I am. I have been creating art; doodling, sketching, craft-making, and painting from the age of 5.
What do you gain from being a member with dot-art?
Being a dot-art Artist Member provides me with a platform to showcase and promote my paintings via in-house exhibitions. dot-art also invite us member artists the opportunity to undertake art projects by Liverpool-based businesses, schools, hospitals, etc.
What does it mean to be an artist in the Liverpool City Region?
Having relocated to the region two years ago, I have enjoyed delving into and being influenced by the rich culture, history and and diversity that the city of Liverpool has to offer.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am a full-time artist painter, and I am currently executing custom-made paintings for local and international clients, and actively showcasing my paintings in solo / collective exhibitions, art fairs, and fine art auctions.
What was the best advice given to you as an artist?
At Art School during my BA (Hons) and MA era my mentors eagerly reminded me not compare myself to other artists, and referred to my art as “quirky” and “‘a joy to see”. Furthermore, to enjoy my art process-making and to be open to trying new techniques. Secondly, not to feel self-conscious about receiving feedback as that can help in boosting my morale.
