Julie James Turner
Julie James Turner: “The inspiration for my practice is womanhood. I seek to emphasis the tensions and celebrate the diverseness of female identity, drawing from both an individual and a collective identity. Period garments and clothing patterns fascinate me. Using their symbolic associations as stimulus, I reinterpret them using traditional textiles and embroidery techniques with contemporary technologies.”
“My most recent pieces aim to comment on women’s gynaecological anatomy, celebrating the “inside on the outside”. By using a 1940s style pair of knickers as the main vehicle of expression, I aim to bring a familiar and playful twist to the subject matter.”
Julie James-Turner was winner of The Textile Society Bursary Postgraduate Award 2010.
Please note, “Knickers” 1, 2 and 3 are displayed in white frames without glass. The wearable art pieces are wrap around and come in one size to fit all.
