Explore the history of abstract painting with artist, Madeleine Pires.

Packed with practical learning activities, each lesson will begin with an introduction to classic and modern painting methods, teaching you a broad history of techniques that will help you develop your own unique painting style.

Lesson One: Colour and Spontaneity – Classic Artist: Wassily Kandinsky, Modern Artist: Kate Green

Lesson one will explore colour theory, layering, responding to what your painting “says” and incorporating shapes into your artwork. You will practice “automatic drawing” and develop your confidence in spontaneous exploration. Key themes: Music, intuition, synesthesia.

Lesson Two: Sgraffito Technique – Classic Artist: Gerhard Richter, Modern Artist: Jean Pierre Derian

This lesson will introduce you to the sgraffito technique and the concepts behind this form of abstract art. You will learn about art as a “process” with particular attention to movement, direction and the “blurring” style. Key themes: Liminal, transitory.

Lesson 3: Drip Painting and Gesture – Classic Artists: Jackson Pollock and Janet Sobel, Modern Artist: Ed Swarez – Swarez Art

This lesson will liberate you to become your own version of Jackson Pollock, as you explore “action painting”! Key themes: Movement, dance.

Lesson 4: Texture and Pattern – Classic Artist: Paul Klee, Modern Artist: Alice Boyle

This lesson will focus on texture, encouraging you to explore and experiment with plaster, textured pastes, new materials, mixing sand, paper and other media. Key themes: Whimsical, playfulness.

With each session, you will receive a course handout to download and keep. The handouts detail what that session has covered so all the information is there to refer back at any time.
