This month dot-art speaks to artist Nikko Silco.
Nicola “Nikko” Silco is an artist with aphantasia, a condition that prevents her from visualising images in her mind. Instead, she transforms her world into a vibrant tapestry of colour and creativity through her paintings.
Drawing inspiration from the beauty of nature, the charm of animals, and the joy of food, Nikko’s art reflects the vividness she longs to see in her inner world.
Her work is a celebration of imagination and expression, inviting others to share in the richness of a life filled with boundless creativity.

Can you describe your style of art?
Vibrant and nature-inspired. I’m drawn to bold colours, organic shapes, and the calming energy found in natural landscapes, plants, and animals. My work celebrates the beauty of the outdoors in a joyful and expressive way.
Which medium do you work with and what do you like about it specifically?
I mainly work with acrylic paint. I love how vibrant the colours are and how quickly it dries. Acrylics let me build up layers and see progress in short bursts, which keeps the creative momentum going.

Can you talk us through your process? Do you begin with a sketch, or do you just go straight in? How long do you spend on one piece? How do you know when it is finished?
I always start with a reference image as I struggle to visualise inside my head. How long it takes depends on the piece, some are quick, others take longer. I know it’s finished when it feels right and I don’t want to add anything else.
When did you begin your career in art?
Who or what inspires your art?
Why is art and creativity important to you?
What do you gain from being a member with dot-art?
Being part of dot-art means I get to be in a community of other artists, which is really inspiring. I love seeing what everyone’s working on and learning how different people approach their art. It motivates me to keep growing and trying new things.
What does it mean to be an artist in the Liverpool City Region?
It means getting to know my city in a new way. There’s so much history, creativity, and character here, and I’m enjoying finding ways to bring that into my art as I develop my style.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a series of larger landscapes that are bigger than what I usually paint, which is a bit of a challenge but I’m really enjoying pushing myself with the bigger size.
