The Flower Streets Murals

The Flower Streets in Kirkdale are blossoming with color and community spirit, thanks to the successful completion of a major Safer Streets initiative delivered by dot-art.

Designed to address anti-social behaviour and rejuvenate the local area, this ambitious project has brought together residents, artists, and local leaders to create a stunning series of murals that reflect the neighbourhood’s unique identity. Spearheaded by Culture Liverpool and local Councillors in collaboration with Streetscene, the initiative sought to foster pride and community engagement through art and collaboration.

Central to this vision was the commissioning of dot-art to initially deliver nine (ultimatley twelve) large-scale murals on the gable ends of the Flower Streets houses, each representing the namesake flowers of the streets. Acclaimed visual artist Madeleine Pires led the project, working closely with residents to co-create these vibrant artworks. The project kicked off with a community engagement program, featuring free workshops that encouraged storytelling, writing, drawing, painting, and an appreciation of ecology. Held at the local community centre, these workshops invited schools, groups, and individuals to share their experiences and stories, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration.

Nine murals were completed by May 2024 and have been met with widespread acclaim and admiration from residents and visitors alike. The murals serve not only as a testament to the community’s creativity and resilience but also as a symbol of the positive change that can occur when people come together.

Local resident Nora, who has lived in the area for over 40 years, expressed her gratitude: “It’s been a while since someone has cared enough to do anything. These murals show that we matter.”

The project culminated in a Community Celebration Event in May 2024, where residents gathered to enjoy refreshments, music, and creative activities. The event was a joyful occasion, highlighting the strengthened community bonds and renewed pride in the neighbourhood.

To document the project and its impact, the short film above has been produced, by Event Horizon showcasing the journey and stories behind the murals.

Due to the project’s success, funding was secured for two additional murals in August 2024, and the final, 12th mural was completed in September 2025, completing the full row of houses. This expansion further enriched the community and continues to inspire future initiatives.
